Know your GE dishwasher's control style
GE dishwashers come in two main control styles. Front-control models have buttons on the outside of the door. Top-control (hidden-control) models have buttons on the top edge of the door, which you can see only when the door is open. The steps below note where the two styles behave differently.

1. The door was not closed in time or is not fully latched
A GE dishwasher will not run until the door latches. On many top-control models, the cycle starts only if you close the door within about four seconds of pressing Start. Wait longer and the dishwasher stays idle.

- Check that a rack, pan handle, or utensil is not stopping the door from closing.
2. Control Lock is turned on
Control Lock disables the buttons so a cycle cannot start by accident. A lit lock icon or a control panel that ignores every button usually means the lock is on.
- Press and hold the Lock button, or the button marked with a lock symbol, for about three seconds until the icon turns off.
- Check your owner’s manual if your model uses a different button.
3. Delay Start is set
Delay Start postpones a cycle by a set number of hours. If it was set by accident, the dishwasher looks like it is not starting when it is actually waiting.
- Look for a delay indicator or a countdown in hours on the display.
- Press Start/Reset to cancel the delay, then select a cycle and start again.
4. A cycle is stuck and needs a reset
A cycle interrupted by a power blip or an opened door can leave the controls stuck.
- Press Start/Reset to cancel the current cycle.
- If that does not work, turn off the dishwasher’s circuit breaker for one minute, then turn it back on. This resets the control.

5. The circuit breaker has tripped
No lights at all on the control panel usually means no power is reaching the dishwasher.
- Find the breaker labeled for the dishwasher in your electrical panel and switch it fully off, then on.

6. The GFCI outlet or a wall switch is off

Safety note: A dishwasher combines household electricity and water. Turn off the circuit breaker before you remove the kick panel, the inner door panel, or any part with wiring behind it. If you smell burning or see scorch marks, leave the power off and call a technician.
7. The door latch or door switch has failed
The latch assembly holds the door closed and contains the switch that tells the control board the door is shut. If the door closes but the dishwasher acts as if it is open, the latch or its switch may have failed.
A technician tests the switch with a multimeter with the power off and replaces the latch assembly if it fails the test.
8. The thermal fuse has blown
The thermal fuse cuts power if the control overheats. On many GE dishwashers, the thermal fuse is built into the control board rather than sold as a separate part.

9. The control board or touchpad has failed
