- The serial number: identifies your individual unit, and often shows when it was made. It often follows the label “Serial,” “Ser,” or “S/N.”
Take a clear photo of the label. A photo avoids mistakes between similar characters, such as the letter O and the number 0.
Where to look by appliance
Locations vary by brand and model. These are the most common places.
- Refrigerator: inside the fresh-food compartment, on a side wall or the ceiling. Some models have the label behind the bottom grille or on the back.
- Washer: on the rim under the lid on a top-load washer, or around the door opening on a front-load washer. Some models have the label on the back.
- Dryer: inside the door opening, on the door frame or the edge of the drum opening. Some models have the label on the back.
- Dishwasher: on the edge or inside the frame of the door, or on the tub rim. Open the door and look along the sides and the top edge.
- Oven or range: on the frame inside the oven door, along the edge of the oven opening, or behind the storage drawer. Some labels are on the back.
- Cooktop: on the underside of the cooktop or on the frame. Some models require lifting the cooktop to read the label.
- Microwave: inside the door opening, or on the back or side of the unit.
Use a flashlight, and wipe dust or grease from the label. Unplug the appliance before you pull it away from the wall, and make sure the gas and water lines have enough slack.
If you cannot find the label
- Check the owner’s manual and the warranty paperwork. Some manuals list the model number for your unit.
- Check your purchase receipt or the order confirmation from the store.
- Check the manufacturer’s app or your account on the manufacturer’s website if you registered the appliance.
- Look for a second label. Some appliances have one label on the front and another inside.
- Tell the technician the brand, the type, and the approximate age. The technician can often identify the model.
