Whirlpool refrigerator leaking water: causes and fixes

A Whirlpool refrigerator that leaks water usually has a clogged defrost drain, a leaking water line or inlet valve, or a frozen ice maker fill tube. Where the water appears tells you which one to check first.

This guide follows the water. It explains what to check at each location and when to call a technician. Bonita Appliance Repair has repaired refrigerators in San Diego County since 2012, including Whirlpool models.

Model layouts differ, so check your owner’s manual for the location of the filter, the drain, and the ice maker.

1. Find the shut-off valve for the refrigerator water line, and close it.
2. Unplug the refrigerator before you remove any panel or touch an electrical part.
3. Wipe up the water, so you can see where new water appears.

This usually means the defrost drain is clogged. The defrost cycle melts frost into a drain, and a clog sends the water back into the compartment, where it can freeze or leak out.

1. Empty the freezer section, and remove the shelves and bins that block the back wall.
2. Find the defrost drain, usually at the bottom of the back wall. Your manual shows the exact spot.
3. Flush the drain with warm water, using a turkey baster or a syringe. Clear any visible debris.
4. Pour a small amount of warm water through the drain and check that it flows out to the drain pan.

If water still pools, the defrost system may have failed. A defrost heater, sensor, or timer fault is a technician repair.

Check these causes in order:

• The water filter. Remove the filter and look for cracks. Reinstall it so it seats fully, or replace it if it is damaged or not the right filter for your model.
• The water line and connections. Look for kinks, cracks, and drips where the line meets the valve and the refrigerator.
• The water inlet valve. A cracked or worn valve leaks at the back of the refrigerator, near the bottom.
• The drain pan. A cracked or overfull drain pan can overflow.

A frozen or misaligned ice maker fill tube sends water where it should not go. A faulty water dispenser can also drip.

1. Look at the ice maker fill tube for ice and for cracks.
2. Unplug the refrigerator, and use a hair dryer on a low setting to melt ice around the fill tube.
3. Check that the tube lines up with the ice maker.
4. Run the dispenser and watch for leaks at the dispenser panel.

A torn, dirty, or flattened door gasket lets warm air in, and that air condenses. Wipe the gaskets with warm soapy water, and check the doors close fully.

Make sure the refrigerator is level. A refrigerator that tilts forward can keep a door from sealing.

Call a technician if you find any of these problems:

• A cracked water inlet valve or a damaged water line
• A defrost drain that clogs again after you clear it
• A cracked drain pan
• Water that returns after you replace the filter and clear the drain
