A gas cooktop burner that clicks but will not light almost always has a spark or gas-flow problem at the burner itself. A misaligned burner cap, wet or clogged burner ports, or a dirty igniter cause most of these calls, and all three take a few minutes to check.
This guide covers gas cooktops and gas ranges from Samsung, Whirlpool, GE, Frigidaire, LG, and other brands. It explains why a burner clicks without lighting, why it will not click at all, and why it keeps clicking after it lights. Bonita Appliance Repair repairs gas cooktops and ranges in Bonita, Chula Vista, National City, and across San Diego County.
If you smell gas: turn the burner knobs off, do not flip light switches or use the igniter, leave the house, and call SDG&E at 1-800-411-7343 or 911 from outside. Do not troubleshoot a range that smells of gas.
How gas burner ignition works
A gas cooktop lights each burner with electronic spark ignition. Turning a knob to Lite closes a spark switch behind the knob. The switch signals the spark module, which sends high voltage to an igniter electrode next to each burner. At the same time, the burner valve releases gas through the burner head and out the ports under the burner cap. The spark lights the gas.
On most cooktops, every igniter clicks when any one knob is turned, because all the electrodes share one spark module. That is normal. The spark system runs on 120-volt household power, so a gas range still needs to be plugged in to light automatically.
This guide covers gas burners only. For electric coil, radiant, or induction cooktops, see cooktop repair in San Diego.

Match the symptom to the cause
| What the burner does | Most likely causes |
|---|---|
| Clicks but will not light | Misaligned cap, wet or clogged ports, dirty or cracked igniter, low gas flow (causes 1–6) |
| Will not click at all | No power to the range, failed spark module, failed spark switch (causes 7–9) |
| Keeps clicking after it lights, or with the knob off | Moisture in the spark switches, shorted switch or wiring (causes 10–11) |
| Lights with a yellow, lazy, or uneven flame | Clogged ports, misaligned cap, air shutter or gas pressure problem (cause 12) |
Burner clicks but will not light
1. The burner cap is not seated
The burner cap sits on top of the burner head and spreads the gas evenly. A cap knocked slightly off center after cleaning blocks the gas from reaching the igniter. This is the most common reason a single burner clicks without lighting.
- Turn the burner off and let it cool.
- Lift the cap and set it back down so it sits flat and centered. It should not rock.
- On sealed burners with pins or notches, line them up with the burner head.
2. The burner head or ports are wet or clogged
Boil-overs, grease, and cleaning water fill the small ports in the burner head. A burner that was just washed may not light until it dries completely.
- Remove the cap and burner head if your model allows it.
- Clear each port with a straight pin or a paper clip. Do not use a toothpick, which can break off inside.
- Let the parts dry fully, or dry them with a hair dryer on a low setting, before reinstalling.
3. The igniter electrode is dirty
The igniter electrode is the small white ceramic post next to the burner. Food and grease on its metal tip weaken the spark.
- With the range off, wipe the electrode with a dry cloth or a soft toothbrush.
- Check that the spark jumps from the tip to the burner when you turn the knob to Lite.
4. The gas supply is off or low
If no burner lights, the problem is upstream of the cooktop. The range shut-off valve behind the range may be partly closed after the range was moved or serviced.
- Check that the shut-off valve on the gas line behind the range is fully open, with the handle in line with the pipe.
- Check whether other gas appliances, such as the water heater or furnace, are working.
- If no gas appliance works, call SDG&E.
5. The igniter electrode or its wire is cracked
A cracked ceramic electrode or a damaged igniter wire leaks the spark to the cooktop frame instead of the burner. You may see the spark jump somewhere other than the burner tip.
A technician replaces the electrode and wire for the affected burner.
6. Gas flow to the burner is restricted
A burner with a small, weak flame on its highest setting, or one that lights only after several seconds, may have a restricted orifice or burner valve. A range that was converted between natural gas and propane without the correct orifices also burns poorly.
Orifice, valve, and regulator work involves the gas supply and should be done by a technician.
Burner will not click at all
7. The range has no power
With no power, none of the igniters click. The oven light and clock usually go dark as well.
- Check that the range is plugged in, and check the circuit breaker.
- Press Reset on any GFCI outlet that feeds the range.
- During a power outage, check your owner’s manual. Many gas ranges allow surface burners to be lit with a match; follow the manual’s instructions exactly.
8. The spark module has failed
The spark module powers every igniter. If the range has power but no burner clicks, the module or its wiring has likely failed.
A technician tests the module output and replaces it if it fails.
9. A spark switch has failed
Each knob has its own spark switch. If every burner clicks except when you turn one particular knob, that knob’s switch has likely failed.
Spark switches are replaced individually, or as a harness on some models.
Burner keeps clicking
10. Moisture has reached the spark switches
Spills and cleaning sprays can run down the knob stems and into the switches. A wet switch can keep the igniters clicking even with the knobs off.
- Turn off the breaker for the range to stop the clicking.
- Pull the knobs off and let the area dry for at least 24 hours. A hair dryer on low can speed this up.
- Clean the cooktop with a damp cloth, not a spray, to keep liquid out of the switches.
11. A spark switch or wire has shorted
If the clicking continues after the switches are completely dry, a switch has worn out or a wire has shorted.
A technician isolates the faulty switch and replaces it. Leave the breaker off until then if the clicking will not stop.
Burner lights with a yellow or weak flame
12. The flame is yellow, lazy, or uneven
A healthy gas flame is mostly blue with even cones around the burner. A yellow or orange flame, soot on pans, or a flame that lifts off the burner means the gas is not burning cleanly. Clean the ports and reseat the cap first.
If the flame stays yellow, have the range checked. Incomplete combustion produces carbon monoxide. California’s Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Prevention Act of 2010 requires CO alarms in homes with gas appliances, so make sure yours are working.
Samsung gas burner clicking but not lighting
Samsung gas ranges and cooktops use sealed burners with separate caps and burner heads. Samsung burners that click without lighting are usually caused by the same problems covered above:
- Cap or burner head out of position: Samsung burner heads and caps must be fully seated after cleaning. A head that is rotated or tilted blocks the gas path to the igniter.
- Wet burner parts: Samsung burner heads and caps should be completely dry before use.
- Clicking that will not stop: moisture in the spark switches after a boil-over or cleaning. Turn off the breaker and let it dry.
If a Samsung burner still will not light after these checks, the igniter, spark switch, or spark module needs testing. See Samsung appliance repair in San Diego.
When to call a gas cooktop repair technician
Call a gas cooktop repair technician when:
- A burner still will not light after you reseat the cap, clean the ports, and dry the burner
- No burner clicks and the range has power
- The clicking will not stop after the switches dry for 24 hours
- The flame stays yellow or lifts off the burner
- You smell gas at any time (call SDG&E first)

Gas burner FAQs
Why is my gas stove clicking but not lighting?
The most common causes are a burner cap that is not seated flat, burner ports that are wet or clogged, and a dirty igniter electrode. If no burner lights, check that the gas shut-off valve behind the range is fully open.
Why does my gas stove keep clicking after the burner is lit?
Continuous clicking usually means moisture has reached the spark switches behind the knobs. Turn off the range breaker, remove the knobs, and let the area dry for at least 24 hours. If the clicking returns when dry, a spark switch needs to be replaced.
Why won’t my gas stove click at all?
If no burner clicks, the range may have no power, or the spark module has failed. Check the plug, the breaker, and any GFCI outlet. If the range has power and still does not click, a technician should test the spark module.
Can I light a gas stove burner with a match?
Many gas ranges allow surface burners to be lit with a match during a power outage. Check your owner’s manual and follow its instructions. Never try to light a burner if you smell gas.
Is a yellow flame on a gas stove dangerous?
A yellow or orange flame means the gas is not burning completely, which can produce carbon monoxide. Clean the burner ports and reseat the cap. If the flame stays yellow, have the range checked and make sure your CO alarms work.
